Actor Vijay’s support for the AIADMK combine this Assembly election created trouble within his Makkal Iyakkam on Monday, with C Jayaseelan, State president of his fan club from its inception, being removed from the Iyakkam for working against the movement’s principles and political stance.
Jayaseelan, however, claimed that he, along with over 2,500 other fans across the State, had voluntarily opted out of the Iyakkam and would join the DMK soon.
Stating that their political views were not respected by the Iyakkam’s high command, around 500 members, largely teenagers, said to belong to the Iyakkam, congregated at Anna Arivalayam on Monday afternoon, raising slogans against Vijay and his father S A Chandrasekar.
“Our political views were not taken into consideration by Iyakkam founder Chandrasekar, who pledged support for the AIADMK alliance. Twenty-five district office-bearers wanted to support the DMK, yet Chandrasekar announced that the social outfit will campaign only for the Opposition party,” said Jayaseelan. Chandrasekar was the real decision-maker in the Iyakkam, with Vijay largely unaware of his fans’ political choice, he said.
“So these rebels would join the DMK and campaign for the party,” he added. The fans, who had gathered at Anna Arivalayam to join the DMK, however, returned later, unable to meet the party high command and said they would join the party in a few days.
Other prominent office-bearers who gave up their post included Oviya Raja, north Chennai district president, Chinnamalai Bala, Chennai district president, and S Manjula, Madurai women’s wing president.
“The decision to remove Jayaseelan and east Thiruvallur district president Stalin Prabhu was made on Monday morning,” said Chandrasekar.
Speaking to Express, R Raviraja, State secretary of the Iyakkam, claimed that the rebels were lured into the DMK with a heavy pay. This was obvious because these office-bearers had never stated their support for the DMK when State-level consultation among fans was held last month, he reasoned.
The Iyakkam enjoys a membership of nearly 23 lakh, divided into 47,000 clubs across the State.
